Medical Marijuana Card

If you are a licensed nurse or other healthcare professional in Florida and have a Medical Marijuana Registry Use Card here is some of what you need to know.

Drug Test: If you submit to an employer ordered drug screen (random, for cause, workers comp related) your drug test will return positive for THC.  The Medical Review Officer may note your prescription for medical marijuana, but the test result will still report a positive drug test.  Medical Marijuana is not federally approved.

Loss of Employment: Testing positive will likely violate your employer’s Drug Free Workplace policy resulting in your termination and the test results reported to the Intervention Project for Nurses (IPN) or the Professional Resource Network (PRN) and/or the Department of Health.

IPN: The Intervention Project for Nurses is a costly 3 to 5 year monitoring program.  It is a complete abstinence contract prohibiting many controlled prescription medications, requiring an evaluation and random drug testing.  If you have a Medical Marijuana Card and are contacted by IPN, STOP!  Call an attorney before discussing the matter with IPN.

PRN: Professional Resource Network is the monitoring program for healthcare licensees other than nurses.  Like IPN, the PRN monitoring contract is for several years, requires complete abstinence contract prohibiting many controlled prescription medications.

DOH: Make sure that your address of record is accurate to receive notice of the pending investigation from the Florida Department of Health.  I have successfully represented nurses and other medical professionals responding to these investigations when my client has a Medical Marijuana Card.
