The Hidden Costs of IPN

The initial costs for the evaluation, hair, urine, and PEth tests are just the beginning. Standard IPN monitoring contracts are a minimum of 3 to 5 years.

Treatment: Before entering an IPN monitoring contract, the nurse is required to complete any recommended treatment. The costs of in-patient treatment can exceed $20,000.00. The costs of IOP is less but still costs thousands of dollars. Many nurses are not expecting to be referred to treatment; however, they are unaware that their controlled prescription medications (Adderall, Xanax, Opiates) will result in a substance use diagnosis and likely referral for treatment and monitoring.

Refrain from Practice: IPN often requires nurses to refrain from practice until cleared to return to work by IPN. This process can take 6 to 8 weeks (longer in some cases). The nurse is required to refrain from working as a nurse while paying for the evaluation, drug tests, and any recommended treatment.

Drug Tests: Throughout IPN monitoring, nurses are required to submit to random drug tests. The costs of these drug tests add up over time. Avoid eating poppyseeds and taking CBD products while in IPN. Also, IPN is a complete abstinence program and there is zero tolerance for alcohol use.

The costs to successfully complete an IPN monitoring program are extensive.
